FINAL PROOFS

THE FINAL PAGE PROOFS were waiting for him from Max. He sat down and read the whole book, starting at 6:45 AM and finishing at 4:50 PM.

They were wrapping up the last book details. Max had sent the book jacket, and Ernest thought it looked fine, but he hadn’t yet received the frontispiece. He told Max the book’s dedication would read “To Pauline.”

Ernest was ready to get this book to the printer, as he needed the money. Max’s prediction that Ernest would be able to triumph over lagging book sales caused by the Great Depression wasn’t true—the Depression still held the country in its vice two years after it had begun, and it was affecting sales. Thankfully, he’d received $24,000 from the sale of A Farewell to Arms movie rights to Paramount, but that was the last big money he’d made. He still received royalty checks from A Farewell to Arms, but it had been three years since it was published, so sales were slower as readers awaited his next book.

Before he caught pneumonia in June, he had been feeling wonderful, like a kid again, writing easily. He told Max that he had three excellent stories to sell him—“Homage to Switzerland,” “The Light of the World,” and “The Mother of a Queen”—and he’d sell the set for $2,100, which was $9,000 less than what Ernest thought they were worth.

He signed the letter “Yours always Ernest—,” and got it ready to put on the mail truck the next day.
